Step Afrika celebrates
stepping, an art form born at African American fraternities and based in African traditions. As the first professional company dedicated to stepping, Step Afrika’s intricate kicks, stomps and rhythms mixed with spoken word pound the floor and fill the air. We step to entertain but also to raise awareness for the
culture that created stepping. From Appalachia to South Africa,
from stepping to gumboot to Zulu, we seek to build connections
between people and to highlight the similarities in our dance forms,
our lives and our communities. Our motto is “if we can dance
together, then we can work together.” We found this to be true as
we’ve traveled the globe. The Step Afrika
International Cultural Festival brings people like you to Johannesburg,
South Africa, each year to build friendships that can last a lifetime.
And stepping is just one way of starting the conversation.
