Dear Friend,

Happy African American History Month!

This February, Step Afrika! is celebrating African-American culture & history with performances all across the nation. From Massachusetts to New Mexico; Pensacola to Minneapolis, the company is making a tremendous impact on thousands of Americans, inspiring many who know little of stepping or its rich origins. Just read what a recent audience member had to say:

"It was hard to say which was more complex - the rhythmic thundering of feet while hands clapped and slapped up and down, over and across bodies, or the deeply rooted, underlying history. Both came together as Step Afrika!, the world’s first professional stepping group, hammered the Overture Center’s Capitol Theater stage Friday night before an enthralled, packed audience.

When Executive Director Brian Williams formed Step Afrika! in 1994, he sought to elevate it to a higher art form. If Friday night is any indication, he’s more than succeeded."

Step Afrika! works hard to make history every day. And our recent partnership with African Ancestry, the only company that can trace your maternal and/or paternal ancestry back to a specific present-day African country of origin, is very special to us.

In honor of Black History Month, African Ancestry will give a free Premium Ancestry Test Kit to the first 8 donors who donate $200 or more to Step Afrika! This is an amazing way for our friends to not only support Step Afrika!, but to trace their DNA with a highly-rated organization. Make your donation today and claim your test kit!

Founded in 2003 by Dr. Rick Kittles and Gina Paige, the Washington D.C. based company has today helped over an estimated 100,000 people re-connect with the roots of their family tree. African Ancestry(this should be a link to AA’s website) is the world leader in tracing maternal and paternal lineages of African descent. With the industry’s largest and most comprehensive database of over 25,000 indigenous African samples, African Ancestry determines specific countries, and more often than not, specific ethnic groups of origin with the highest level of detail, accuracy and confidence.

Thanks so much to those who have already donated!

I think every school

Your Donations Are Stepping Stones to A Better Future!

In 2009, we completed almost 150 performances in local schools, serving over 25,000 children. We also visited over sixty colleges and universities, teaching and performing stepping and South African dance. And in January of 2006 Step Afrika was awarded Washington D.C.’s Mayor’s Arts Award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education, in recognition of our continued commitment to educating and inspiring District youth.

This is why we need your help. So many requests come in to Step Afrika for performances and we are working to meet the demand. Yet, the realities of school systems already burdened by the increasing costs of education make programs such as ours challenging to fund. Your donation helps keep our programs affordable and accessible. Make your tax-deductible contribution today!

Step Afrika! has been selected as one of Greater Washington's "Best Small Charities"! Click below to see us in the Catalogue for Philanthropy.
