ACROSS THE WORLD

Step Afrika! serves as a cultural ambassador, representing the nation and the tradition of stepping to international audiences.

We partner with the U.S. State Department, Navy Entertainment, and other national and international organizations to hold performances and workshops for communities around the world.

As part of our international tour, Step Afrika! joins with local dance groups and other arts organizations to develop performances that blend the styles of different cultures and create a unique experience for the audience.

Our program is a testament to the power of the arts. It brings communities together and builds tolerance, unity and acceptance among young people everywhere.

HOME PERFORMANCE SERIES

Every June, Step Afrika! returns home after months of touring. The Home Performance Series is a special end to the Company’s season. In the 2019-2020 season, Step Afrika! is excited to perform Drumfolk.

Step Afrika!’s Drumfolk, inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739, explores this little-known event in American history that would forever transform African-American life and culture. When Africans lost the right to use their drums, the beats found their way into the body of the people, the Drumfolk. New percussive forms took root leading to the development of some of our country’s most distinct performance traditions like the ring shout, tap, and stepping.

MAGICAL MUSICAL HOLIDAY STEP SHOW

The Holiday Season becomes even more magnificent when celebrated with the Step Afrika! family. Every year, the Company performs for DC families and engages the community in their festive performance. Be sure to join in the family tradition that is now 7 years strong.

THE MIGRATION: REFLECTIONS ON JACOB LAWRENCE

Step Afrika!’s signature work, The Migration is based on Jacob Lawrence’s iconic painting series that chart the story of African-American migrants moving from the south to the north in the early 1900s. Each piece uses the images, color palette and motifs of one or more of the paintings to tell the migration story through body percussion and dance.
