The Big Ticket: Puppet Fest, ‘Chicago,’ and more things to do

January 10, 2023 04:03 PM by GRAHAM MEYER

Into the dance-quiet month of January loudly steps Step Afrika!, a D.C.-based dance company specializing in both traditional South African dance forms and the African American form of stepping, most famously performed by pledges of fraternities and sororities at historically black colleges. Stepping has had a high-cultural moment lately because of its show-stopping appearance in “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” the contemporary opera performed at Lyric Opera and New York’s Metropolitan Opera this past season. Step Afrika!’s local performance finishes with “Chicago,” a work mapping a Chicago summer onto polyrhythmic body percussion.
Auditorium Theatre. 7:30 p.m., Jan. 14.
